Add Slide to a VoiceThread

Before you try to use Voicethread, please do these 2 steps:

I. Check your Canvas user account settings to make sure you have an email address listed. If not, add an email address to your Canvas user account and make it your default email address in Canvas user account if you do not have one.

II. Set Your Primary Address in Penn Directory if you do not have an email address listed.

95% of access issues are resolved when students do these two steps.

Please note: The above video provides instructions for APOP-specific courses. Your course may have slightly different parameters but this video should give you a basic understanding of how VoiceThread works. Please reach out to online-learning-help@sas.upenn.edu if you have additional questions.

How to Add a Slide to a Group Voicethread (step by step with screenshots)

1. Enter the Canvas site.

2. Find the VoiceThread. Most likely, it will be under Modules or Assignments. It might be helpful to full-screen the VoiceThread, which you can do by clicking on the Open in a new tab? link (circled in red below).

"Open in a new tab?" appears near the center-top of the embedded Voicethread display in Canvas.

3. Click on the VoiceThread (circled in red below).

4. Click on the postcard-display button that is in the lower-right corner of VoiceThread.

5. Click the + button.

6. Use any of the available content creation options to build your slide:

Record audio
Upload files (green arrow below points to this option).
Record video (example circled in red below).
A note about uploading PowerPoints: When you upload a PowerPoint that has multiple slides, a new slide will be created in VoiceThread for each of the PowerPoint slides. Please note that if you are attempting to upload a PowerPoint that has audio added to it, the audio will not transfer over with the file. It is recommended that you record audio using the comment function in VoiceThread.

7. Add additional slides as needed to complete the activity.

Additional Information:

If you have difficulty adding a slide, we recommend first trying another browser, such as Firefox, if you used Chrome.

Second, we recommend toggling off any browser extensions or add on's you have in place and trying to add your slide again.
