Overview
Videos added to Panopto after the course development phase can be captioned using Panopto's ASR (automatic speech recognition) captioning feature.
- Please note:
- ASR captions do not appear automatically after a video is added to Panopto. The following are estimates for how long it might take before the ASR captioning option is available:
- Videos one hour or shorter: 8 hours
Videos over an hour: One day
- Videos one hour or shorter: 8 hours
While typically accurate, Panopto’s auto-captioning feature can sometimes produce errors. Thus, it is recommended that you review the captions before applying them and that you make any necessary corrections through the caption-editing function. Step 6 in the instructions below explains how to do this.
The duration of the editing process depends on the video’s length and the number of errors you find. Fortunately, however, the actual auto-generation of captions typically only takes a few minutes, so once you edit the captions and apply them, it should not take too long for the captions to appear.
In general, the best practice for editing captions is to have the speaker in the video make these changes, as the speaker is best suited to make editorial decisions about corrections, particularly those pertaining to specialized terminology. Thus, the recommended approach for editing captions is to have the speaker follow the instructions below. If someone other than the speaker has been asked to apply captions to a video (e.g., a TA needs to apply captions to a faculty's video), please email online-learning-help@sas.upenn.edu for assistance.
