This article shares best practices for managing recordings in the Class Recordings area of your Canvas course site.

The information in this article is intended for instructors and TAs in Penn LPS Online, MSAG Online, and other online and hybrid courses in the College of Liberal & Professional Studies (LPS). If you are an instructor or TA in a non-LPS online or hybrid course, please contact your Local Support Provider (LSP) for help.

What Are Class Recordings?

In each Canvas course site, there is a button in the navigation menu labeled Class Recordings. This Class Recordings button leads to an area in the Canvas site where instructors can upload additional supplementary videos they would like the users enrolled in their course to watch.

Additionally, if an instructor or TA records a synchronous class meeting in Zoom and has enabled the Zoom integration in the Canvas site, the Zoom recording will available to anyone enrolled in the Canvas site through the Class Recordings button no more than 24 hours after the recording ends.

The Class Recordings button in Canvas integrates with Panopto, the main media platform used at Penn.

How do Class Recordings Differ from Media Team Content?

If you worked with the SAS Online Learning Media team to create videos or other media for your Penn LPS Online, MSAG Online, or other online and hybrid courses in the College of Liberal & Professional Studies (LPS), these recordings will not appear in Class Recordings. Rather, your instructional designer will embed Media team-created content will be embedded on pages in your Canvas site.

Copying Videos from Class Recordings

  • Videos you recorded by yourself:  If you recorded a video in Panopto by yourself, this video will not be copied by default into future Canvas sites. You will need to copy these videos yourself if you wish to re-use them in future versions of this or another course.
  • Zoom Recordings:  If you recorded Zoom meetings with your class, these videos will not be copied into future Canvas sites. If you want to use Zoom recordings in future classes, it is strongly recommended that you edit the videos to remove any sensitive or private information students may have shared in the recording. Please see Panopto 101 for Instructors for tutorials on how to edit video recordings. Our team does not provide editing services for self-recorded videos.
  • Additional tips: It is recommended that you download and save any self-recorded videos from Panopto if you want to keep them indefinitely. This suggestion does not apply to videos recorded with the Media team; we back-up these videos.
