Overview of a Peer Review Canvas Assignment

If a peer review occurs in a Canvas assignment, you will submit your assignment, and then after 24 hours of the first submission due date passing, you will be given a peer to review.

Try to leave constructive and worthwhile feedback for your peer review; if this is your first time leaving feedback for a peer review, ask your instructor for guidance on what makes quality feedback. Also, carefully read the instructions if provided, and ask your instructor if you have questions.

Sometimes, peer reviews can be anonymous; in this case, you will see "Anonymous" next to the person you need to review.

Being Assigned a Peer Review

You will be alerted to this assignment via your to-do list and the recent activity area on your Canvas Dashboard.

Please see the following page for more guidance on how to know if you are assigned a peer review.

Please submit your document to the peer review assignment before the due date so your peer can receive the document without a delay - meaning, a late submission may hold up your colleagues. You will not receive a peer’s assignment to review until you successfully submit your document.

We recommend clicking into the assignment as soon as you see it on your to-do list. All due dates of the peer review are not included in the to-do list notification, so it is essential to read the complete assignment instructions and check in with the instructor if you are unsure about what is required by which date.

Completing a Peer Review

Instructors can ask you to fill out a rubric as part of the peer review process or annotate on the document itself. Please see the following page on completing a rubric for a peer review and information on how to annotate a document.

Important Notes:

  • You will see a check mark next to the name of the student you are peer reviewing when the review has been completed successfully. If you see an exclamation point next to their name, re-open the assignment and ensure the rubric is complete (see images below for clarification on where to add rubric comments), and comments have been added to the rubric or the assignment overall. Refresh the page after you have done the above steps.
  • If your assignment does not include a rubric, you are required to add at least one comment. You cannot view any existing feedback submitted by another student or the instructor.
  • You cannot complete a peer review on a mobile device. Click the "Show Rubric" button to open the peer-review rubric Add peer-review comments to each text-box. Then, click the "Save Comment" button to complete the peer review

Viewing my feedback for the Peer Review Assignment

You will find the feedback of your review in the assignment submission area. You may find information annotated on the document itself, in the View Rubric comments area or along the right side of the submission in the comment area.

at the top of the page view feedback and show rubric are circled on the submission details page

Please see the following page for additional instructions on how to view your feedback after completing the Peer Review assignment.

Peer Review in Canvas (Additional tools: Harmonize & Perusall)

Many peer reviews will occur within the Canvas Peer Review tool as covered above. Canvas allows two other options for Peer Review assignments: Harmonize Peer Review and Perusall Peer Review

Please see the guidance linked above to learn more about how to complete a Peer Review in these tools. If you are unsure of what tool the Peer Review is happening in and it does not look like the tools outlined above, please reach out to your instructor for additional guidance.
