AI for Penn LPS Online

Modified on Mon, Oct 12 at 10:53 AM

AI Overview

Each course will have different AI Course Policies which you must abide by as a Penn student. If you are uncertain whether AI is allowed in the course or for a particular assignment, it is always better to reach out and ask your instructor than to assume AI use is allowed.

Please see the Statement on Guidance for the University of Pennsylvania Community on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Students, Educators, Staff, and Researchers.

If allowed to use an AI in a course, we recommend using a Penn Protected option so your data does not train a model.

Penn Protected Options for Using Gen AI

PennChat (OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Sonnet Models)

Steps to access:

  1. If you are off Penn's Campus, please first log in to Penn's GlobalProtect VPN. If you are on campus, connect to the Penn network.
  2. After logging into the GlobalProtect VPN, go to https://pennchat.upenn.edu/ and log in with your PennKey and PennKey password.

Note: PennChat has several models in one chat interface to select from by clicking on the oval in the top left that will read "Claude Sonnet #.#".

Tokens are given to every user. Each model costs a different number of tokens to prompt. For more complex inquiries, a Premium Model is recommended, whereas for simpler inquiries you may elect to use a balanced or economical model to save tokens.

You can see your current number of tokens by navigating to the bottom left and clicking into the circle with your initials, this is the User Settings area. Tokens are replenished when the user has reached 0. You will be able to see when your tokens will reset in the User Settings area mentioned above.

PennChat does not have the capabilities to generate images or to search current news as of September 2026. This is a new tool that will roll out additional features in the coming year.

Microsoft Copilot Chat (OpenAI's ChatGPT)

Steps to access:

  1. Go to the Microsoft online portal at https://portal.office.com
  2. Log in to activate your account, with your PennO365 username and password. See note below*.
  3. Click the Add Copilot Chat button. The Microsoft online portal will open to the Copilot Chat page.
*Note: Enter your PennO365 username using the pennkey@upenn.edu format, and your PennO365 password is the same as your PennKey password.

Note: Penn Law and PSOM users can access Microsoft Copilot Chat using your school login.
