Below, we provide suggestions (as well as some links to direct step-by-step instructions) on how to create a basic presentation in whichever software you like to use, and then offer further suggestions on how to upload it to Canvas to share with your class.
Some tools (in bold) are centrally supported by Penn, and we can assist with some additional guidance on their use. Others are commonly used/freeware, these are not centrally supported.
Important:
- Please note: If you are using a mobile device to record yourself these default to very high-resolution videos which can take a long time to upload. We recommend lowering your video recording resolution BEFORE filming to aid in an easy upload to Canvas. Please see our article on lowering resolution for videos for general information.
Creating A Presentation
Sometimes an instructor requires you to create a slide deck for a presentation. Below are some common options:
- Google Slides
- Canva
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Available to all students, please see our Microsoft article on how to access your free student Microsoft tool account.
Recording and Sharing
There are many tools that you can use to record yourself and then share a link or upload to Canvas.
- Recording yourself in Zoom
- Screensharing a Presentation in Zoom
- Recording yourself in Zoom with your Presentation as the Background
- Recording directly in Canvas Rich Content Editor
- Supported in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox Browsers Only - no need to upload or share a link with this option, as this happens inside the Canvas text box area!
- In Harmonize? Try out the Record Screen button to share a slide deck on your screen and narrate over it. Make sure you allow your browser to access your camera and audio.
Uploading your Presentation to Canvas
- Attach to Discussion (sometimes works, sometimes fails to attach if the file is too large)
- Upload to Canvas Files area (always works - see video below for step-by-step)
- Saved to Zoom Cloud and can supply a link to your presentation
- Recorded with Zoom, saved to the computer, and Uploaded to Canvas
Additional Support & Guidance
- Please reach out to online-learning-help@sas.upenn.edu if you experience issues with any of the bolded tools/software above as well as reaching out to your instructor to let them know you are in communication with tech support.
