Overview

An instructor may request that you record yourself in a discussion, assignment, or somewhere else in Canvas. Below, we will show you two ways to accomplish this. We will also provide a few links at the bottom if you would like to try a different tool, such as Zoom or your mobile phone, to record your video and then post it to a discussion.

Please note that the approach below will not work in a Safari browser.

How to Record in Canvas via the Built-in Canvas Media Recorder

  1. Navigate to the discussion you would like to submit a recording.
  2. Select the "Reply" button to open the Rich Content Editor.
  3. Click on the "Insert" button along the top of the Content Editor and then select "Media" or the button with a play button and a music note.
  4. The "Media" button contains the "Upload/Record Media" option, click this button and a new window will open.
  5. This window contains two tabs at the top: "Upload" and "Record"
  6. Select the "Record" Tab
    1. You may need to allow permissions for your camera and your microphone to be used by the browser.
    2. Please note: You can only use this record feature in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox; this will not work in Safari.
  7. Record yourself, please note you can do this as many times as you would like, and hit publish when you are happy with the recording.

How to Record in Canvas using Panopto Browser Capture Recorder

  1. Navigate to the discussion you would like to submit a recording.
  2. Select the "Reply" button to open the Rich Content Editor.
  3. Click on the green Panopto logo (triangle ribbon) button located in the Content Editor button menu.triangle shaped ribbon panopto logo in rich content editor toolbar
  4. A pop-up titled Class Recordings will open with three tabs along the top; select "Record".choose, upload, and record tabs being shown, record being highlighted
  5.  Once "Record" is selected, name your recording, and then select the "Launch Capture" (Browser) option button.name your recording and select the left launch capture option
  6. After you select "Launch Capture", a recording screen will appear with your camera and microphone on. If you do not see yourself in this view, or your microphone and camera have a line through them. Look where the URL is located at the top of the screen, you should see a button to toggle "Site Settings". You may need to adjust permissions for camera and microphone use. Browser permissions for the camera and the microphone in Google Chrome
  7. Once you are able to view yourself, and your microphone is selected. Select the red circle at the bottom of the screen to record. Press that same button again to stop the recording. Stopping the recording will bring you to the upload screen (pictured below), which will provide options to redo the video, start over completely, or rename the video. Important: You do not need to pay attention to the bottom of this screen, add a description, or "share" with anyone. We advise waiting until the uploading bar at the top is fully green, or you receive the "it's safe to close your browser window" alert. Then close or X out of that screen. Again, there is nothing you need to do with the bottom portion of this screen. When you are happy with the recording and the upload is complete, just close the browser window.Upload complete bar in the top left, record new and redo buttons to the right.
  8. Once you have closed the window, you will be brought back to the class recording screen that now shows your final version of the video and a button at the bottom that says "Insert". This will place the video into the discussion.Record button selected with final video in place and insert button along the bottom
  9. After selecting "Insert", you will see your video in the discussion reply area and can then add some text below or above the video, if you wish to do so. When you are happy with your entire post, select the "Reply" button in the bottom right.

If the two above options do not work, or if you would like to record in Zoom, or via an external device like your mobile phone, please look at Creating a Presentation and Uploading it to Canvas for several other options.
