Overview

An instructor may request that you record yourself in a Canvas discussion. Below we will show you the steps to accomplish this. We will also provide a few links at the bottom if you would like to try a different tool, such as zoom or your mobile phone to record your video and then post it to a discussion.

Please note the below approach will not work in a safari browser.

How to Record in Canvas via the Built-in Canvas Media Recorder

  1. Navigate to the discussion you would like to submit a recording.
  2. Select the "Reply" button to open the Rich Content Editor.
  3. Click on the "Insert" button along the top of the Content Editor and then select "Media".
  4. The "Media" button contains the "Upload/Record Media" option, click this button and a new window will open.
  5. This window contains two tabs at the top: "Upload" and "Record"
  6. Select the "Record" Tab
    1. You may need to allow permissions for your camera and your microphone to be used by the browser.
    2. Please Note: You can only use this record feature in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, this will not work in Safari.
  7. Record yourself, please note you can do this as many times as you would like, and hit publish when you are happy with the recording.

If this does not work, or if you would like to record in Zoom, or via an external device like your mobile phone, please look to Creating a Presentation and Uploading it to Canvas for several other options.
