Events, Workshops & Drop-in Sessions for LPS Instructors

These workshop and drop-in sessions are intended for Penn instructors and their TAs, primarily within the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS) in Arts & Sciences, preparing to teach courses in an online or remote format or wishing to incorporate online teaching methods and technologies into their campus courses. All Penn instructors and staff are welcome.

Student Engagement in LPS Courses: What does it look like and how do you encourage it?

This event will cover the variety of ways to facilitate student engagement in on-campus and online courses, including discussion of tech tools for discussion and interaction as well as synchronous (and in person) indicators of engagement. The focus of the event will be a faculty panel of LPS instructors who are each teaching online and on-campus in both undergraduate and graduate programs. This event will also include a brief presentation from staff who recently developed assessment tools for student engagement in online environments. 

The instructor panel includes Yvette Bordeaux, Director of the Professional Masters Programs in Earth and Environmental Science, who has taught online and on campus for LPS since 1992 and now teaches primarily in the Penn LPS Online Climate Change certificate courses and Masters of Environmental Studies programs but also offers a course in Applied Geosciences and LPS summer opportunities (both online); Clayton Colmon, Director of Curriculum Design for the Arts and Sciences Online Learning team in LPS, who has co-developed and teaches in the Digital Strategies and Culture and Social Difference, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certificate courses within Penn LPS Online and also teaches for the Masters in Organizational Dynamics program; Ruth Elliot, Lecturer in Biology, who teaches biochemistry in person for the post-bac Pre-Health Programs as well as science courses online for undergraduate Penn LPS Online students.

This event will focus on how Penn Librarians can support faculty to prepare for their classes and encourage their students to use the Libraries. Rebecca Stuhr, Associate University Librarian for Academic Engagement & Director of Arts and Culture Libraries, and Alexandrea Glenn, Student Engagement Librarian, will discuss the myriad resources available to LPS instructors including but not limited to: subject librarians, course- or topic-specific LibGuides, access to specialized software, and e-reserves.

Understanding ChatGPT and AI Implications for Your Teaching
Tuesday April 23^rd 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (note this workshop is 90 minutes)

The ability of generative AI tools like ChatGPT to create original text, code and images has understandably inspired intense conversation in higher education about assignments and academic integrity and whether to use these tools as partners in thinking, creativity and learning. This workshop will be an introduction to generative AI – what it is, what it can do, what its limitations are and how detectable it is – followed by small group discussions on implications for faculty teaching at Penn. The event will be led by Dani Crowl, Associate Director in the office of Community Standards and Accountability, and Cathy Turner, Director of Faculty Programming and Pedagogy in the Center for Teaching and Learning. This event is geared towards instructors in the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS) in the School of Arts and Sciences but all Penn faculty and staff are welcome.

• Discussion tools in Canvas: This workshop focuses on the wide variety of discussion options available to instructors and students via Canvas Discussions, and Perusall, as well as how to choose the tool that is best for your teaching goals
• Assessment & Grading in Canvas: This workshop will on using Canvas assignments, quizzes, and gradebook for assessment and grading
